Zindagi Na Milegi Dubara (Won't Get Life Twice)

The message of the movie is captured well in the title.

You have only one life. So, enjoy it to the fullest. Take a vacation; Go around the world; Jump from the sky; Have fun.

Well, if you got that message from the movie, watch it again ! The message is delivered in between all the fun, and frolic of the three friends. That's the beauty.

Most of us take life for granted. We are certain that we will not die tomorrow. We believe that there is a lot of life remaining to do *things*. Arjun says to Laila that he will take up cooking (something that he loves to do) after 40 after he has saved enough for retirement. Laila corrects him. The message she gives is similar to the parable of the rich fool [2]. This is one message - to live in the present; to live your life each moment, one at a time. This does not mean vacation, jumping from the sky etc. It also does not mean that we need to find a job as scuba diving instructor.

In the movie, the 3 friends are having a bachelors party. Each of the friend picks an extreme adventure that the other two also has to take part. In the movie, the friends have knowingly or accidentally picked adventures that at least one of the other friends fear. This becomes a mock exercise to teach each of them to face the fears of the lives, to overcome those fears and experience what is beyond. This is another message - to identify, confront and overcome each of our fears in lives and to live beyond them. You will be surprised how much *fears* you carry with you. Overcome them. Experience what is beyond them.

When Imran is having a emotional time after meeting with his father, whom he is seeing for the first time, the background poem states another fact - that one is not alone in his suffering in this life; that everyone has a share of suffering and consolation from life; that in spite of the suffering each of us are not to lose any of the precious moments of this wonderful life. This is another message.

'Arjun, Insaan ka karthavya hotha hai kosheesh karna, kaamyaabi aur na-kaamyaabi tho uske haath main hain'. Imran jokes after trying to get a date in vain with Laila and Arjun scoffs at him.
What a message ! This is yet another message to all of us. To not worry about the results, but try with only a focus on doing the right thing. This scene reminded me of the Mahabharatha scene when Krishna advices Arjun to focus on action and not the result. It is also interesting, ironic and inspiring how Farhan and Zoya delivers such a message although they grew up with no religious education [3].

Another message is to help each other in their problems.

Well, these are all advices that we have heard several times before. It is just that they get lost in the trivialities of life, or are crushed by our unfounded fears, or get postponed for a later time, or get crushed by our greed and jealousy.

- Key Point -

The message is only as good as the action that it prompts in each of us. Have you heard the 'parable of the sower' ? [1]. The 'seed' in the parable represents the message. Each one of us is a type of ground where the seed (message) falls. Whether the seed grows and produces anything depends on the soil or ground (you and me). Some of us are fertile ground; they hear and understand the message and then modify their lives. Some others welcome the message when they hear it, but the troubles of the life prevent them from producing results.

I hope you and me become fertile grounds. Let the message take roots in us and produce fruits.
